Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells made using ceramic material. These are bonded to the front and top surfaces of the teeth and are an excellent, simple and versatile way of enhancing a person’s smile. They can be used to fix crooked, chipped, stained and inappropriately spaced teeth. Veneers are virtually undetectable to others and are resistant to stains caused by tea, coffee, and even tobacco products. With proper care, they can give you a healthy and beautiful smile for over 10 years.
The procedure of installing veneers on the teeth takes place in the following steps:
First, we will evaluate your teeth and your overall dental health to understand if veneers are a good option for you. To begin the installation of veneers, we will first prepare the tooth/teeth by removing some part of the enamel to allow for the added thickness due to the veneer. After this, a mold of the teeth is taken and sent to a dental lab where your custom veneer is fabricated. Until then, a temporary restoration will be placed over your prepared tooth.
During your next appointment, the veneer is placed over the tooth using glycerin or water to check its color and fit. Once the veneer is ready for application, the tooth is cleaned, and a special dental cement is used to bond the veneer onto your tooth. A special curing light is used to harden the bond. We may ask you to return for a follow-up visit one or two weeks later to see how your teeth are functioning with the new restoration in place.
Veneers are easy to maintain just like your natural teeth using a good home care regimen comprising of brushing and flossing. It is not uncommon to experience a slight bit of sensitivity to heat and cold after the placement of your veneer. This should go away in a couple of weeks or so.
