When restorative treatments such as fillings, crowns and root canal therapy are not enough to save a tooth, extraction may be needed as a last resort. With advancements in dental technology, tooth extractions are now much less painful than before. At Just Dental, we make use of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation to make the procedure of tooth extraction painless, comfortable and relaxing for you.
Sometimes, the wisdom teeth may not erupt properly through the gum, leading to crowding, improper bites and chances of potential damage to the nearby teeth. This condition is also known as tooth impaction and can be painful and harmful to your oral health. Some signs of wisdom tooth impaction are facial swelling, inflammation, gum swelling, pain, and infection. Extraction is the only way to get rid of the problems that arise due to tooth impaction. In general, the absence of the four wisdom teeth does not impact any of your oral functions such as chewing, speaking and the shape of your face.
Prior to extraction, the area around the tooth is numbed, and then dental instruments are used to carefully pull out the tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Sometimes, a tooth may have to be broken into pieces to extract it. The extraction site is disinfected and cleaned after removing the tooth, and a gauze pad is placed to control bleeding. Antibiotics may be prescribed to control infection.
Vigorous brushing or rinsing, drinking through a straw, eating hard foods and smoking should be avoided for a few days following the extraction procedure in order to allow proper healing. If swelling is experienced, a cold compress can be applied to the outer cheek to alleviate it.
